The Center for Sustainable Research Data Management was represented at the Volkswagen Stiftung’s scoping workshop.

Titled “Shaping Future Competencies in Research Data Management: Requirements for Competencies, Terminologies, and Communities for Data-Driven Science” (original "Zukunftskompetenzen Forschungsdatenmanagement gestalten: Anforderungen an Kompetenzen, Terminologien und Communities für datengetriebene Wissenschaft”) the workshop took place from July 1 to 3 at Herrenhausen Palace in Hanover. In the workshop organized by Mirjam Blümm, Canan Hastik, and Britta Petersen, 32 experts from research, higher education didactics, and infrastructure discussed the fundamental guiding questions for the substantive, strategic, and didactical advancement of data-driven science, with a particular focus on European developments:

• What competencies does data-driven research require?
• What do competency frameworks describe, and can they be related to one another (terminology)?
• Who maintains and further develops these systems (governance / communities)?

The focus was on:

• Identifying interdisciplinary needs with a view toward data-competent science
• Developing common areas of action and recommendations for action

An important outcome: Writing teams will draft a position paper with recommendations for action by the end of the year.
